Louisiana is divided into five appellate circuits under La. R.S. 13:312. An appeal from a District Court or City Court goes to the Court of Appeal whose territorial jurisdiction includes that parish. Each circuit is further subdivided into three election districts.

Louisiana has 42 Judicial District Courts covering all 64 parishes. Each JDC is the primary trial court of general jurisdiction for its parish(es). Find your JDC by parish below. Contact the parish clerk of court for filing and fee questions (see the Parish Clerks section).

Certain populous parishes have standalone Family or Juvenile Courts that handle domestic and juvenile matters separately from the District Court's general docket.

Orleans Parish is unique in Louisiana — the Civil District Court and Criminal District Court are separate courts housed in separate buildings. Orleans also has dedicated First and Second City Courts, Municipal Court, and Traffic Court.

Each Louisiana parish has an elected Clerk of Court responsible for maintaining civil, criminal, and conveyance records, accepting filings, and collecting fees. When you file a form, this is the office you'll deliver it to. Contact information is verified against the Louisiana Clerks of Court Association directory. Always call the clerk's office to confirm current filing fees, hours, and accepted formats before going in person.

Louisiana City Courts have limited jurisdiction — typically civil matters up to $15,000 to $50,000 depending on the court, misdemeanor criminal cases, and traffic/ordinance violations (La. C.C.P. art. 4843). Not every municipality has a city court; those that do are listed alphabetically below. Contact data verified against the Louisiana City Court Clerk's Association roster.

Note on mayor's courts: Many Louisiana municipalities that do not have a city court operate a mayor's court, a municipal tribunal with jurisdiction limited to city ordinance violations and traffic offenses.
